Mathematics is a very old and traditional science and at the same time is more relevant than ever. Whether natural sciences, finance, information technology, Data Science or Artificial Intelligence - no key technology of the 21st century can be pursued without a mathematical foundation. As part of a mathematics degree, you will learn to recognise and analyse structures, model facts and solve problems, even those where visualisation fails. The skills you acquire during your studies will provide you with a reliable basis that will enable you to penetrate increasingly complex structures, analyse them and - on this basis - develop answers to challenging (future) questions. Mathematicians are therefore in high demand on the labour market. They are needed here, for example, as data scientists or analysts, as actuaries for insurance companies or banks, as consultants for management consultancies or in the logistics or telecommunications industry to help solve the challenges of modern society.

The foundation for every form of mathematical activity is laid at school. As a teacher of mathematics, you therefore have a special responsibility. In addition to enthusiasm for the subject, you must also impart the necessary basic mathematical skills - an extremely important and challenging task that requires both solid subject-specific and didactic skills.

In the first year of the bachelor's course, you will be introduced to the working methods of university mathematics. With these skills, you can then study individual classical mathematical disciplines in depth in order to prepare yourself for a wide range of specialisation options.

The Bielefeld Faculty of Mathematics enjoys an excellent reputation in the international research landscape. Many international collaborations and the high number of mathematicians who choose Bielefeld for a research stay are proof of this. The Faculty's special profile and proven strength in research enable it to offer a broad range of subjects. The Bielefeld Faculty of Mathematics, with its Institute for Didactics of Mathematics and its focus on didactic research and teaching, offers an extraordinarily attractive environment, particularly for teacher training courses, in which the fascination of research in scientific collaboration with a view to applications in the school context can be experienced at an early stage.

Learning and working together is very important in a mathematics degree programme. You work very closely together in tutorial groups and are also individually supervised by students from higher semesters (tutors) in connection with lectures. There is plenty of room for technical discussions and questions. As a student of mathematics, you will work in a team right from the start, both in tutorials and in the seminars in Mathematics Didactics. You will be encouraged to discuss your questions and solutions together and to share your successes in solving problems.

The courses

You will find the programme of lectures for this course in the eKVV.
