Module 23-LIT-M-BM1 Basic Module 1: General Literary Studies

Building on the historical and systematic competences acquired in the Bachelor's degree programme, students will have a comprehensive knowledge of the issues and methods of General Literary Studies after completing the basic module I. The competences in dealing with literary texts are further developed here in terms of literary theory and systematic reflection on an extensive range of literary epochs, genres and problem contexts. On completion of the module, students will be able to classify the concepts of poetics, aesthetics, rhetoric and narratology historically and systematically and apply them independently to an in-depth text analysis that is differentiated in terms of humanities and cultural studies. Furthermore, students have specific methodological skills that reflect the history of research, in that they can recognise the methods in their historical genesis and theoretical-historical development. The specialist skills and knowledge acquired form the methodological and literary-theoretical-systematic basis for the rest of the Master's programme in Literary Studies. In seminar discussions, students learn to develop and present their own academic position. Students demonstrate the skills they have acquired in a final oral module examination. The final exam is based on the discussions in class as well as on the Angeleitete Selbststudium which allows the students to apply the methodical, theoretical and systematic fundamentals acquired in the seminar to a corpus that they work on independently. Their communication skills are required here, as are their synthesis and transfer skills.

Basic Module 1 provides basic knowledge of the subject, introduces students to the scientific contexts of General Literary Studies and develops the disciplinary self-image based on the scientific prerequisites of the subject and its historical genesis. The Master's programme addresses general questions by systematically linking the individual philologies and examining literature on a broad theoretical basis in order to explore its inner connections, its conditions of creation, reception and transformation. Texts and concepts relevant to the history of theory are used to discuss the foundations and systematically relevant questions of General Literary Studies. Aspects of poetics, rhetoric and aesthetics relevant to literary studies are a focal point. In addition, the self-conception of literary studies in theory and history itself is scrutinised. Knowledge of the theory of perception and cognition, genres, theory and history of literary criticism as well as the basics of literary production and reception and knowledge from related areas such as philosophical aesthetics are acquired. After completing the module, students will have extensive knowledge of literary theory and methodology.
