For information on the duration of the modul, refer to the courses of study in which the module is used.
Upon completion of the modules, participants should be able to assess the effectiveness of the methods discussed and apply them successfully to problems in various application domains.
This module provides an understanding of the fundamental concepts of neural information processing. Building on models of information processing in biological neural networks, it presents the theoretical foundations and learning methods of artificial neural networks. In practical tutorials, students consolidate what they have learnt and apply it in a programming context with support from neural network simulators.
This module builds on the relevant skills taught in modules 39-Inf-ML. It is therefore strongly recommended that you complete this module, or an equivalent one, beforehand.

Module structure: 1 bPr 1
Portfolio with final assessment comprising:
1) Portfolio of tutorials relating to the lecture content
Tutorials or programming tasks set in connection with the course (pass mark: 50% of the available marks). The assessment of the tutorials also includes direct questions regarding the solution approaches, which students must answer during the tutorials. The teaching staff may require students to explain and demonstrate their work individually, and may replace some of the tutorials with in-person sessions. The exercise tasks included in the portfolio are usually set on a weekly basis and are designed to support students’ independent application of the course content presented in the lecture.
2) A final examination on the lecture
The final examination on the lecture content relates to the tutorial or programming tasks or builds on the skills learnt in the tutorials.
Further details, particularly regarding the duration of the final examination, are provided in the course description.
Final written examination (lasting 90–180 minutes) or final oral examination (lasting 20–40 minutes) covering the content taught in the lecture and developed in the tutorials (in connection with lecture/seminar).
Alternatively, the written examination may be conducted as an e-exam, an open-book exam or an e-open-book exam. In the case of an open-book written examination and an e-open-book written examination, the duration is 120–180 minutes.
Both portfolio elements are assessed by one examiner. A final overall mark is awarded.
