Competencies

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to independently acquire subject-specific research areas of cognitive and experimental neurolinguistics: They will be familiar with the underlying brain structures and their functions in language processing in perception and production at various language levels (phonetics, lexicon, morphology and syntax, pragmatics). In addition, they will have a basic understanding of the possibilities of modern neurolinguistic research and brain imaging. They will be familiar with the medical causes and manifestations of impaired speech, language and communication processes, with a focus on acquired language disorders (aphasia). The fundamentals of other cognitive processes and neuropsychological disorders will also be covered. The skills are acquired and practised through reading relevant specialist articles and subsequent group discussions in the course sessions, presenting current studies, completing exercises, writing session minutes and/or formats involving a comparable amount of work. The module examination documents in particular the ability to interlink the knowledge acquired.

Content of teaching

The course content varies depending on the specific courses offered as part of the regular programme. One course focuses more on the neuroanatomical foundations and the causes and manifestations of neurogenic language, speech and communication disorders, while the second course focuses more on cognitive processing models of the human language system and methods in neurolinguistic research. Students gain insight into current research questions and methods in neurolinguistics. This is deepened through reading specialist literature, short presentations and discussions in the courses.

Study requirements

Allocated examiner Workload LP2
Teaching staff of the course Course 1 (seminar)

Students acquire course content through reading texts and/or exercises. The usual time required for this work is approximately 1-2 hours per week. For designated exercises, a solution-oriented assignment must be submitted on time to ensure verifiable learning progress. After prior consultation with the instructor regarding the date and content, students also present up to three selected assignments in the seminar. In particular, problems and/or alternative solutions are discussed with the other participants in the respective seminar session. If a course is suitable for this, instead of presenting the assignments up to three times, students may present a text in the form of a short presentation (30-45 minutes) including a short written paper (750-1000 words). In addition to those mentioned above, other formats requiring a comparable amount of work, such as the preparation of meeting minutes, are possible for obtaining course credit. The specific requirements to be fulfilled in the course will be determined by the instructor and announced at the beginning of the lecture period.

The module examination is administered by one of the persons teaching the module. The examiner determines the form of the examination. The module examination covers the content of both courses attended in the module. Possible forms of examination are:

  • 90-minute written exam or 30-40 minute oral exam on the module content
  • Written assignment in which aspects covered in multiple courses are addressed and analysed independently. The assignment should be approximately 10-12 pages in length (not including appendices) and may build on work previously completed as part of a module course (e.g. a presentation), in which case references to aspects covered in multiple courses must also be made.

The module is used in these degree programmes:
