Competencies

After completing the module, you will be able to recognize and utilize market-based options at the interface of sports and technology. You will be able to identify opportunities for business start-ups and knowledge transfer from university. The skills you acquire in developing a start-up profile and business plan will enable you to evaluate opportunities and prospects for your own career planning after university. Insights into the German and European patent and intellectual property rights system will enable you to secure your own ideas while simultaneously evaluating their commercialization potential. You will be encouraged to implement your own research developments in concrete start-up projects, with the support of the department and a founder. The goal is successful cooperation with research funding and transfer institutions at Bielefeld University, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the federal government.

Content of teaching

The module will introduce you to the technical and administrative framework and fundamentals of starting a business. You will also receive an overview of the characteristics and peculiarities of different start-up profiles. You'll learn the basics of developing business plans and explore various financial calculation options for starting a business. You'll learn which strategies can be used to protect inventions (patents, intellectual property rights, and trademarks) and market ideas.

The coursework serves to practice a reflective and discursive attitude to the topics covered in the course and has a practising and deepening character with regard to the competences anchored in the module. An academic achievement is the completion of an assignment for practice purposes. Such tasks can be: the preparation of minutes of a meeting, an abstract of a short text, an essay, the preparation of a contribution to a meeting or a project presentation, the solving of application tasks, the moderation of a discussion group or similar. The following applies to all contributions: Students may be required to submit written contributions totalling a maximum of 2000 words or oral contributions totalling a maximum of 40-50 minutes.
