Competencies

Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

Students are given an initial overview of the concepts and methods of mathematical physics. The aim of this course, which is compulsory for all students on this degree programme, is for students from different subject areas to develop a common language. Using basic concepts and examples, students learn how to transfer physical problems to mathematics and how to apply mathematical ideas in physics.

Content of teaching

Courses that may be considered include:

  • Symmetries in physics, in particular the theory of discrete and continuous groups
  • Linear operators in Hilbert spaces
  • Differential geometry and gauge theory

Study requirements

Allocated examiner Workload LP2
Teaching staff of the course Exercises in Foundations of mathematical Physics (exercise)

Regular completion of the exercises (usually 50%), in each case with a recognisable and goal-oriented solution approach, as well as participation in the exercise groups (in particular: Presentation of own solutions or solution approaches, asking technical questions and critical discussion of the physical problems, working on attendance exercises).
The exercises to be worked on will be issued one week in advance. The lecturer determines the exact criteria at the beginning of the course and announces them.

Written exam (approx. 2-3 hours)
Oral examination (approx. 30 minutes)
The module examination covers the lecture and tutorial.
The written examination can also take place in the form of an electronic examination in presence, the oral examination in the form of an electronic examination at a distance. An electronic written examination at a distance is not permitted.
