Competencies

Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

This course explains the concepts needed for the design and construction of intelligent machines that carry out complex tasks autonomously. Such machines, for example robots, use sensors to gather the required information and decide on their own what actions have to be carried out to complete the task. This course introduces the most important computational intelligence methods used in autonomous systems. In the practice part the theory will be applied "hands on" to generating autonomous behaviours in mini-robots.
The courses in this module are usually offered in English. The students can request that the courses are held in German.

Content of teaching

In the lecture we will discuss the following topics:

  • Rule-based and Fuzzy decision making
  • Artificial Neural Networks
  • Supervised/unsupervised Learning
  • Evolutionary Computation
  • Motion control, navigation
  • Robot vision

Recommended previous knowledge

  • Basic knowledge about data structures and algorithms
  • Programming skills in some higher programming language such as C, C++, or Java

Necessary requirements

Explanation regarding the elements of the module

In some degree programmes, the module (partial) examination can also be taken "ungraded" at the student's discretion. A corresponding specification must be made before the examination is taken; a subsequent change (graded - ungraded) is not possible. If this option is selected, it is not possible to use this module for a degree programme in which this module is taken into account in the overall grade calculation.

In some degree programmes of the Faculty of Technology, the module examination can also be "ungraded" at the student's discretion (see explanations of the module elements and the respective subject-specific regulations). If the ungraded option is selected, it is not possible to use this module for a degree programme in which this module is taken into account in the overall grade calculation.
See below for explanations of this examination (graded examination option).
