Competencies

In the courses of this module, you will supplement, expand and deepen your employment-relevant skills by specifying your previous theoretical and methodological knowledge as well as your practical professional and study skills (especially planning skills and the ability to innovate) to the appointment targeted by your study profile and testing them in practice-oriented situations. You will be able to design, carry out and analyse your own small empirical research projects in small groups and record the results in written documentation with the help of the theoretical and methodological skills you have already acquired in the modules "Scientific Work and Methods" (61-PW-WAM), "Sport and Economics" (61-W-SW) and "Sport and Society" (61-W-SG). To this end, you will acquire methodological expertise in dealing with computer-aided methods of statistical data analysis and experimental approaches in order to be able to apply these in your project work. In addition, working in small groups will enable you to reach joint pragmatic research decisions and to communicate and reflect within the group.

You will demonstrate the acquisition of these competences by reflecting on the experience gained in the empirical implementation of data collection and data analysis methods as part of the small group project in the form of an independently written report.

Content of teaching

In the course "Data Analysis" you will be introduced to the functionalities and possibilities of computer-aided data analysis tools (preferably Stata or SPSS and MAXQDA). In addition to the preparatory steps (e.g. data transformation/variable generation), you will work on the application and interpretation of descriptive statistics and simple methods of inferential statistics and qualitative content analysis using sample data sets.

As part of the course "Theoretical Foundations of Project Work", you will develop your individual profile by familiarising yourself with various forms of quantitative and qualitative research in sports economics or sports sociology research fields and, on the basis of your own empirical study in a "small group project" on a selected sports sociology or sports economics issue, you will learn to distinguish between methods of data collection and data analysis and reflect on their use depending on the problem.

Recommended previous knowledge

Successful completion of module 61-PW-WAM is recommended.

The seminar is designed in such a way that each participant completes a course assignment. The coursework serves to demonstrate a reflective and discursive attitude to the topics covered in the course and has a practising and deepening character with regard to the competences anchored in the module. An academic achievement is the completion of an assignment for practice purposes. Such assignments may include: preparing minutes of a meeting, an abstract of a short text, an essay, preparing a contribution to a meeting or a presentation, solving application tasks, moderating a discussion group or similar. The following applies to all contributions: Students may be required to submit written contributions totalling a maximum of 1800 words or oral contributions totalling a maximum of 30-40 minutes in this course.

Workload 90h
LP2 3

The module examination takes the form of a written report of approx. 15 pages. In terms of content, you will reflect on the experience gained during the study project in the practical implementation of data collection and data analysis methods. The organiser of the course "Small Group Project" supervises the project work in advance and assesses the project report.
