Module 61-PW-WAM Scientific work and methods

With a view to your desired profile, you will acquire basic methodological skills and acquire a basic understanding of empirical work, which is essential for understanding social and natural science problem areas. On the one hand, you will acquire the ability to critically reflect on empirical literature (as dealt with in many seminars), and on the other hand, you will acquire methodological skills in this module that you will use and further develop in the course of your studies in the context of independent work projects.
In addition, you will acquire employment-related skills as well as a practical orientation to your intended occupational field by enabling you to systematise and evaluate different occupational field segments and the different forms of work organisation prevailing there with regard to their structures. The knowledge you acquire in the course about the various fields of activity, the requirements for starting a career and the opportunities for a further career will enable you to organise your studies in a targeted manner.

You will be able to demonstrate your ability to acquire knowledge of working techniques and empirical research methods and to transfer this knowledge to fields of application by taking a written examination in the course "Fundamentals of Empirical Research Methods" to show your understanding of the issues dealt with in the lecture.

In the course "Academic Working Techniques", you will be familiarised with elementary methods of dealing with academic texts in a meaningful and archival way using profile-related examples. You will also be given an overview of the structure and requirements of your profile-related degree programme and receive practical tips on how to organise it and find your way around the university.

The "Research Methods" course focuses on the statistical methods of data processing and data collection. You will also be given an overview of the basic types of scientific approaches to problems in sport and Sports Science.

The course "Orienting Occupational Field Studies" provides you with an overview of the different areas of activity in the occupational fields targeted by the study profiles "Business and Society" and "Psychology and Exercise" (sports clubs and associations, commercial sports providers, event agencies, marketing agencies, sponsoring departments of large companies, sporting goods manufacturers, sports tourism companies, sports media, fitness and leisure industry, sports tourism, health care organisations, exercise and sports therapy, sports psychology consulting, etc.). Various external experts and former students of the degree programme will be invited to provide information about the opportunities for starting a career, the qualifications required, the requirement profiles and career opportunities in the various fields of activity.
