Competencies

In discussions with academic staff from Division II on current research projects in the "Research Colloquium," you will not only demonstrate your knowledge of current research at an international level but also develop your own viewpoints and research questions. You will develop your own perspectives and, in addition, derive problem definitions and hypotheses, and be able to explain and defend your own approach. In your master's thesis, you will apply the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired during your studies to a sports- or technology-related question and work on it independently.

Content of teaching

The master's thesis is typically an empirical work with a cognitive/movement science, sports psychology, or preventive-rehabilitation background. Topics for master's theses can be assigned and supervised by staff from Divisions I, II, and VI or, upon agreement, by external research institutes. In preparation for and alongside your master's thesis, you will attend the "accompanying seminar," in which you will present your ideas or your own work at an advanced stage. In the “Research Colloquium” of Department II, you will actively discuss the department’s current research.

Recommended previous knowledge

Prior successful completion of modules 61-IuB-BM, 61-IuB-FM, 61-IuB-NBB, 61-IuB-NKB and 61-IuB-Psy is recommended.

Such assignments can be: preparing a contribution to a meeting or a project presentation of the work planned for the Master's thesis, preparing an expert opinion on the work projects of other students presented in the seminar, preparing an exposé on the planned topic of the Master's thesis, solving application tasks or similar. The following applies to all contributions: Students may be required to submit written contributions totalling a maximum of 1800 words or oral contributions totalling a maximum of 30-40 minutes in one course.

The Master's thesis can be written as an individual or group thesis, whereby in the latter case the authorship of individual parts must be indicated.
The Master's thesis is an independent scientific, written elaboration of approx. 40,000 words (excluding title page, abstract, list of contents, list of figures, tables and references, tables, figures, appendix and declaration of independence). Students must demonstrate that they can work independently on a scientific task from the range of topics covered by the degree programme within the specified deadline.
To this end, students contact a supervisor and discuss a possible assignment. The supervisor is responsible for issuing the final assignment. The processing time begins with this issue. At the same time, the supervisor and student must ensure immediate registration at the examination office, in particular to appoint the examiners and document the examination procedure. The Master's thesis can be written in German or English in consultation with the supervisor. The completion time is six months.
The thesis must be submitted on time, preferably in electronic form, to the Sports Science examination office. For empirical theses, the data must be enclosed in electronic form.
Further regulations can be found in the Master's examination regulations.
