Competencies

Students learn a scientific and empirical approach to the topics of the Master IISY. After completing the module, students are able to independently search for relevant literature, critically examine it, select and evaluate research questions, approaches and methods. Furthermore, students are able to apply empirical-experimental methods. They are able to present scientific results and to write them down in the form of a scientific paper. Finally, they have acquired knowledge about ethical, social and legal aspects of human-machine communication. They are able to submit an ethics proposal for their evaluation study.

Content of teaching

Students learn empirical-experimental methods applicable in the context of the topics of the Master IISY. The module consists of two seminars, in the theoretical seminar the students learn empirical methods and practice them by means of small exercises. Ethical, social and legal aspects in the area of intelligent interactive systems are also addressed. In the practical seminar, research questions are developed in small groups (1-2 persons) and evaluated on a given data set. Results of the group work are scientifically described ("white paper") under guidance, mutually reviewed and presented in the format of a conference presentation. This ensures that necessary research skills of scientific work are developed and demonstrated and are available for further qualification at the earliest possible stage.

Explanation regarding the elements of the module

Theoretical seminar (2 CP) with accompanying exercise (2 CP) + practical seminar (4 CP)

Reasoning for the necessity of two partial examinations:
In Partial Examination 1 (Practical Seminar), students demonstrate their ability to adequately present research results developed (partly in groups) (e.g., in the context of a "conference").
In Partial Examination 2 (Theoretical Seminar), students are expected to engage in independent discussion and critical examination of a selected topic in the field of Intelligent Interactive Systems.

Study requirements

Allocated examiner Workload LP2
Teaching staff of the course Scientific Research Methods: Theoretical Seminar (seminar)

Exercise tasks for the theoretical seminar: For example, at least one text will be read for each session, and 1-2 questions about the text will be formulated in the forum, with discussions of the texts taking place during the session, or exercise tasks related to the content of the respective session will be assigned and worked on at home, to be presented in the next session (alternating each time).

Examinations

oral presentation with written exploration
Allocated examiner Teaching staff of the course Scientific Research Methods: Practical Seminar (seminar)
Weighting without grades
Workload 30h
LP2 1

Presentation (30-40 minutes) with written report (10-15 pages).
In the practical seminar, studies and data analyses should be conducted, with the results formulated in writing as a 'white paper' and presented as a talk at a 'workshop.
