As part of the general competence concept for the MA in Sociology (see https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/soziologie/studium/master/pdf/Kompetenzkonzept_Masterstudiengaenge.pdf), students acquire the ability to work on media sociological issues in the context of general theories of sociology and social theory, as well as knowledge of the methods of sociological media research. The module enables theoretical reflection and methodically controlled empirical analysis of the significance and performance of media in various social contexts and the application of these insights.
This module focuses on the forms and functions of the media in modern society and the role of the media system in the self-observation and self-description of society. An important thematic basis is the media change from the mass media to the new media of computer-based forms of communication. The subjects covered range from media-supported integration relationships in modern society to the production of the public sphere in print media, radio, film, television and the Internet. Relevant here are analyses of media offerings as well as communicative and subjective processes of appropriation of media offerings.
Based on general communication theory principles, central media sociological theories and issues are explored in the courses of the module. The seminars can focus on specific theoretical or empirical issues. Students deal intensively with fundamental theories and empirical studies. Methods of social science media research are also taught and implemented in various fields of application.
For the in-depth study of media sociology, it is recommended that students choose one seminar with a more theoretical orientation and one with a more empirical orientation.
The module programme is always completed with a written assignment. This always takes the form of a term paper.
