Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

By the end of the module students know about

  • the value of interdisciplinary research by studying global structures und interactions on a world scale
  • the key issues, relevant research questions and appropriate methods for analysing world phenomena through the lenses of law, sociology, history and cultural sciences.
  • how to develop their own research questions and preliminary research projects on topics of global structures and interactions.

Content of teaching

The main purpose of the Basic Module is to provide students with an overview of the issues, aims and the working patterns of the programme. Students are introduced to approaches, research questions and common methods used by the cooperating disciplines.
The lecture is organized by teaching and research staff of all participating faculties. From their respective disciplinary perspectives, lecturers explain and illustrate different perspectives and approaches to understanding historical and recent global structures and developments.
The lecture is accompanied by tutorials taught by teaching assistants. The tutorials allow discussion space for a small number of students (up to ten): issues taught in the lectures are discussed and illustrated with examples; and there is space for group works aiming at a students’ project to be presented as part of the module. Furthermore, the tutorial helps the students getting acquainted with the university, such as library services, IT facilities, and international students’ support facilities.
Individual mentors will be assigned to all students. In the meetings between mentors and mentees, individual study plans can be discussed and developed towards a successful completion of the programme.
