Competencies

Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

Students are familiar with basic concepts of scientific work and are able, under supervision of a senior researcher, to scrutinize a specific problem in the context of a given scientific project, to propose hypotheses, elaborate concepts to test these hypotheses, and to present their project in an appropriate documentation.

Content of teaching

In small groups, students either scrutinize important ecological interactions or specific adaptions or traits, assess the abundance and diversity of taxonomic groups, or use modelling approaches to analyze empirical data. They use ecological, taxonomic and analytic skills to address a specific problem.
Relevant literature is surveyed and assembled using databases, laying the foundation to elaborate an conducting the experiment or observation using appropriate statistics. The project should be presented and discussed during lectures and seminars further detailing the scientific background and training scientific presentation and debate.
Research module B may be done in a relevant external research institute or in another relevant company or institution in Germany and abroad. In this case, supervision will be provided by a member of staff from both the Faculty of Biology and the external institution.
It is recommended to do Research Module A and Research Module B in different departments/institutions.
