Competencies

After completing the module, students will be able to independently design empirical studies and will be familiar with the statistical methods used to evaluate these studies. These skills are practised and demonstrated through the completion of exercises, the presentation of assignments, the referencing of texts and/or formats with a comparable workload. The module examination documents in particular the ability to link the acquired knowledge.

Content of teaching

In the courses of this module, students repeat and deepen their knowledge of quantitative research and evaluation methods in linguistics as well as techniques of statistical analysis. The background, quality criteria and procedures of scientific research, the planning and implementation of empirical research designs, and the quantitative-statistical processing, analysis and presentation of data are taught. This knowledge forms the basis of empirical research and is of great importance in applied contexts.

Students acquire course content through reading and/or exercises. The usual time required for this work is approximately 1-2 hours per week. For designated exercises, a solution-oriented assignment must be submitted on time to ensure verifiable learning progress. After prior consultation with the instructor regarding the date and content, students also present up to three selected assignments in the seminar. In particular, problems and/or alternative solutions are discussed with the other participants in the respective seminar session. If a course is suitable for this, instead of presenting the assignments up to three times, students may present a text in the form of a short presentation (30-45 minutes) including a short written paper (750-1000 words). In addition to those mentioned above, other formats requiring a comparable amount of work, such as the preparation of meeting minutes, are possible for obtaining course credit. The specific requirements to be fulfilled in the course will be determined by the instructor and announced at the beginning of the lecture period.
