The Master's degree programme in Mathematics will be offered in English from the winter semester 2025/26.

Mathematics is a very old and traditional science and at the same time is more relevant than ever. Whether natural sciences, finance, information technology, Data Science or Artificial Intelligence - no key technology of the 21st century can be pursued without a mathematical foundation. As part of a mathematics degree, you will learn to recognise and analyse structures, model facts and solve problems, even those where visualisation fails. The skills you acquire during your studies will provide you with a reliable basis that will enable you to penetrate increasingly complex structures, analyse them and - on this basis - develop answers to challenging (future) questions. Mathematicians are therefore in high demand on the labour market. They are needed here, for example, as data scientists or analysts, as actuaries for insurance companies or banks, as consultants for management consultancies or in the logistics or telecommunications industry to help solve the challenges of modern society.

As part of a Master's degree program, you will deepen and expand your mathematical skills, you will be introduced to current research questions in mathematics and learn to plan, carry out and complete a research project independently. In addition to the special skills for structuring and analyzing complex issues and communicating them, in a Master's degree you will not only acquire the ability to organize yourself, but also special professional skills in project management.

The Bielefeld Faculty of Mathematics enjoys an excellent reputation in the international research landscape. Many international collaborations and the high number of mathematicians who choose Bielefeld for a research stay are proof of this. The Faculty's special profile and proven strength in research enable a wide range of specialisation options, even in the bachelor course, but especially in the master course. It also offers an attractive research environment in which the fascination of research in scientific collaboration can be experienced at an early stage.

As in any mathematics degree course, learning and working together is very important. You work very closely together in exercise groups and are also individually supervised by students from higher semesters, doctoral students and postdocs (tutors) in exercises accompanying the lectures. There is plenty of room for technical discussions and questions. As a mathematics student, you work in a team from the very beginning and are encouraged to discuss your questions and solutions together and share your successes in solving problems.
