The Master degree programme German as a Foreign Language and German Studies is a programme steeped in the tradition of the Magister and Ph.D. programmes on offer since 1979, and remains popular among domestic and international students.

Our Master students deepen their understanding and develop their research skills in areas of German linguistics and cultural studies, including German-language literature from within and outside of Germany. As a student in our Master degree programme, you will explore topics concerning the acquisition and teaching German as a foreign and second language, in combination with German linguistics and literary studies from an outsider perspective. You will gain an understanding of related research disciplines, such as research on second language learning/acquisition, foreign/second language didactics, linguistics, as well as cultural and literary studies. A period of study abroad, either a semester-long ERASMUS exchange program and/or an internship outside of Germany, is strongly recommended. Our department offers a variety of financial supports for these international experiences.
In the Master degree programme, you will develop your research, planning, and teaching competencies. You will create and evaluate language and cultural programs as well as educational materials and media. By combining your Master with German studies, you will deepen your understanding of linguistics and literary studies, areas highly relevant to work with language and culture as well as to teaching and research at European and international institutions. The competencies and skills you will acquire in our Master degree programme are highly valuable to a variety of employers, including:

  • institutions - domestic and abroad - specializing in continuing education (such as adult education centres and language schools), including through intermediary organizations such as the German Academic Exchange Service and the Goethe Institute
  • departments of German as a foreign language at domestic post-secondary institutions and German studies departments at post-secondary institutions abroad (if necessary, after the successful completion of a Ph.D. program),
  • German schools abroad
  • and businesses and organizations with international operations

Further career opportunities include fields involving intercultural exchange and mediation, educational liaison and professional development.
