Alexander Horstmann has done extensive research on forced migration and humanitarianism in Southeast Asia, especially
in Northwest Thailand and Northeast Myanmar. He has traveled with his informants from the Karen ethnic minority from the refugee camps in Northwest Thailand to the United States and Western Europe. He has published in his books and articles, among them (with Jin-Heon Jung): Building Noah´s Ark and (With Martin Saxer and Alessandro Rippa): Routledge Handbook of Southeast Asian Borderlands. He is currently preparing a monograph on Vernacular Humanitarianism in the Thai-Myanmar Borderlands.
He has also worked on ritual exchange in Southern Thailand, and charismatic Buddhism and Politics in Thailand,
Myanmar and Laos and on Puer Tea in Southwest China and the Chinese Belt and Road Project. He is teaching
on peace and development, the politics of humanitarianism, forced migration, postdevelopment, and postcolonial studies.
