Current research topics

I am interested in different patterns and aspects of transnational migration. Since 2016, I have been working extensively on such a topic, with a focus on the Vietnamese migrant community in Japan.

During my Master's Degree at Waseda University (Japan), I examined the complex relationship between education brokers/ international education agencies and student migrants in Japan to understand how such a relationship shapes students' migration trajectories and experiences. For my Doctoral Research at Duisburg-Essen University (Germany), I focused on the entanglement between sexuality, masculinity, transnational migration, and mobility. Such an entanglement is explored through the analysis of the ways in which male Vietnamese migrants in Japan negotiate and make sense of their sexual and masculine subjectivities and identities throughout different stages of transnational migration between Vietnam and Japan.

At the moment, I am a part of an ERC-Funded Project on Welfare for Migrant Factory Workers under Market Socialism and working on two individual projects: (1) Monograph and (2) a comparative project on housing for foreign migrants in Japan and Germany.

Keywords: Transnational migration, gender and sexuality, migration intermediaries, contemporary Japan, contemporary Vietnam
