The reference to historical materials is fundamental both for sociology and for historical studies, but often in quite different ways. The main differences concern the relationship with sources and the use of theory. During the workshop, these issues will be discussed referring primarily to Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems and Reinhart Koselleck’s history of concepts. No previous knowledge of Luhmann's and Koselleck’s theory is required.
In this workshop, we will consider and discuss the transformations of temporal semantics in the transition to modernity, in particular the structuring in (future and past) horizons and the reflexivity of temporal perspectives.
