This course will engage with the representation and negotiation of inter- and intracultural contact in selected plays by William Shakespeare and Thomas Heywood. Drawing on secondary literature from Postcolonial and Renaissance studies, we will examine how contemporary Elizabethan and Jacobean anxieties about race, religion, and gender are staged in the dramatic presentation and interaction of characters on stage.
Please acquire a copy of the following plays by Shakespeare. Only use editions by Arden, New Cambridge, or Oxford:
Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice (1600)
Shakespeare, Othello (1603)
Shakespeare, Anthony and Cleopatra (1623)
All other primary and secondary texts will be made available.
