American Marxism. Sounds a bit like a contradiction in terms, doesn't it? If you agree, that testifies to the fact that for over a century Marxism has been the great Other against which notions of American identity have been defined. In this course we will examine American Marxism, socialism, and their less notorious cousin, trade unionism, not as mere monsters under the bed in the U.S. cultural imaginary, but as rich political and intellectual traditions that are responsible for lasting cultural monuments--monuments often whitewashed as "mainstream" (Shhh!).
We will study the histories, theoretical writings, and cultural products (literary works, folk music, film documentaries, etc.) such movements have inspired.
