In his 2015 election campaign, Prime Minister David Cameron promised the British to renegotiate the terms of the UK’s membership of the EU and then put the UK’s membership to a referendum.
This course will briefly chart the history of the UK’s relationship with supranational European organizations, rather fraught from the beginning, focusing on the reasons for rising Euroscepticism, not only in the ranks of the Conservative Party, but also in the wider British public.
The relevant literature will be made available at the start of the semester.
