In Anknüpfung zur Veranstaltung "Grundlagen der Biotechnologie" werden die verfahrenstechnischen Grundlagen gelegt, um eine allgemeine Basis zum Verständnis der Reaktions- und Aufarbeitungstechnik zu schaffen. Dies geht von der Bilanzierung von Prozessen über die Thermodynamik zu Stoff- und Wärmetransport. Verschiedene Prozessführungen werden anhand grundständiger Apparate und Verfahrensweisen diskutiert. Das Lesen von Verfahrensfließbildern, eine kleine Einführung in mathematische Anwendungen und regelungstechnisches Basiswissen gehören ebenfalls dazu.
Der letzte Abschnitt der Veranstaltung wird im zweiten Semester zur Vorbereitung des Praktikums im dritten Semester genutzt. Voraussetzungen vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Analytik können hier in wünschenswerter Breite besprochen werden.
