In this four-day block seminar, we will explore how to approach emotionally charged topics in the classroom, like racism, discrimination, and social inequality, in a way that is both thoughtful and objective and which can be relevant in any school subject. Together, we will look at the role of emotions in the learning process and discuss how they can be harnessed constructively rather than taking over the actual subject. A key focus will also be on the impact of films and audiovisual media, which can act as a door opener for difficult topics in the classroom. Through collaborative viewings, discussions and reflections, we will try to develop concrete strategies for teachers to responsibly moderate and productively utilize the emotional dimension of such topics. It is also intended that you bring along your own experiences on this topic as well as potential materials that you would like to work with in the teaching context. The aim is to gain confidence in dealing with controversial content and to create a constructive learning environment for everyone involved.
