In this course we will first review the idea of learner autonomy and self-directed learning and then go on to look at specific ways in which English lessons can be planned and carried out so as to encourage the development of learner autonomy. After considering at the macro-level work done on introducing more autonomy into language teaching in various European and non-European contexts, we will then, at the micro-level, look in particular at reports on classroom practice by teachers who have implemented learner autonomy in their own English classes in Germany. In the latter part of the course, each week students will be asked to present case studies of learner autonomy in classroom practice from the literature.
