230260 Storytelling in the Primary English Classroom (S) (SoSe 2015)

Short comment

Alternative to Literature, Media and Intercultural Learning

Contents, comment

After a theoretical background on storytelling, including reasons for using stories in the primary English classroom, we will first distinguish between authentic books and so-called readers. We'll then take a look at criteria for "good" authentic books for an English classroom at primary level and analyse some books on the basis of those criteria. After we found a couple of useful books we'll figure out how to successfully use them in class and how storytelling actually works. For example we'll discuss media to support storytelling, changes to the text, techniques of storytelling and pupil's participation. Then we'll take a close look at the 3 phases of storytelling and fill those phases with practical examples. Everyone will be asked to choose one book, which he or she "storytells" to a class, including the presentation of pre-, while- and post-listening activities. We'll end this course by going into school to try out our storytelling skills in front of a real class.
