Widersprüchlicher könnte die Geschichte kaum sein: Im europäischen Kontext erwies sich das Russische Reich als kontinentale Hegemonialmacht und avancierte bis 1848 zum Garanten der prärevolutionären Ordnung. Innenpolitisch war die Ordnung indes brüchig, wie der Dekabristenaufstand 1825 zeigte. Wirtschaftlich verschlief Rußland die kapitalistische Entwicklung und versuchte nach der Niederlage im Krimkrieg, durch umfangreiche gesellschaftliche Reformen das Verdikt der Rückständigkeit zu widerlegen und die Basis für seine Großmachtsansprüche zu revitalisieren. Die Revolutionen von 1905 und 1917 illustrieren, daß dem Ancien régime bei seinen Modernisierungsbestrebungen kein nachhaltiger Erfolg beschieden war.
