Das Seminar widmet sich der Geschichte der Kindheit sowohl in sozial- und kulturhistorischer wie auch in ideen-, mentalitäts-, diskurs- und theoriegeschichtlicher Perspektive und führt in diese unterschiedlichen historischen Perspektiven ein. Ariès (im Original 1960) hat die „Entdeckung“ der Kindheit auf das 16.-18.Jh. datiert, die These der Entdeckung wurde seitdem vieldiskutiert und bestritten. Gegenstand des Seminars ist die allmähliche Entwicklung und Etablierung des modernen, westlichen Kindheitsmusters, das eine lange behütete, scholarisierte, familialisierte und staatlich bewachte Kindheit vorsieht. Die Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen des Seminars entwickeln ein differenziertes Verständnis für die historischen Grundlagen von heutigen Vorstellungen zur Entwicklungs- und Erziehungskindheit sowie zur generationalen Ordnung zwischen Kindern und Erwachsenen.
