This seminar, which is also open to advanced BA students as well as doctoral students, is directed mainly at MA students who are currently writing or intending to write a thesis in British literary and/or cultural studies. The meetings will be held in workshop style, with students presenting their projects and getting feedback on their ideas and results. In connection with these presentations, we will discuss how to plan and organize a research project, how to write research papers, and how to overcome the obstacles that typically occur in the process of doing scholarly research. Whenever no presentation from any of the participants has been scheduled, we will explore and discuss the construction of a cultural icon, viz. William Shakespeare, over a period of 400 years. The subtitle of this course is: "Bardolatry: The Cultural History of a Genius". (Please note that we will not read Shakespeare's plays; we will read texts about Shakespeare that invest in him the ideological value he has had almost from the day he died.)
Materials on this topic will be made available at the beginning of the term.
