300408 Social Policy in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (S) (SoSe 2025)

This seminar discusses social policy in low- and middle-income countries by linking three parts: 1) unequal life chances for different groups, 2) social structures, and 3) established social protection programs in these regions:

Part 1: Unequal Life Chances
The first part explores unequal life chances through five individual sessions on the concepts of Class, Status, Power, and Intersectionality. This section concludes with a workshop on Social Stratification.

Part 2: Social Structures
The second part reviews social structures in different low- and middle-income countries. Individual sessions in this part are Education, Capitalism (labor and markets), and Bureaucracy.

Part 3: Social Protection
The final part focuses on social protection in low- and middle-income countries. It begins with definitions and concepts of social protection beyond the world of welfare states. The second session provides a historical perspective on the development of social protection. And finally, the role of ideas in shaping social protection in these regions will be discussed.
The seminar concludes with a summary session that explains the links between these three parts and provides a framework for analyzing social policies in low- and middle-income countries.
