239969 Cross-linguistische Studien: Intermediate Area (S) (SoSe 2013)

Contents, comment

This course provides a summary of the main language families of the Central American isthmus, with special emphasis on Chibchan, since it is the most widespread, most representative and most studied family if the area. Special emphasis will also be placed on both the migratory paths of the Chibchan peoples -with its corresponding linguistic consequences- and on the presence of exogenous groups (Creoles, Black Carib) on Central American soil. The interaction of groups with such diverse backgrounds has not received much attention in recent time, which to a certain extent is regrettable, as many language contact phenomena can be identified which might eventually play an important role in the homogeneity of a linguistic and cultural area such as the Intermediate Area.
