Sprachen verfügen über verschiedene Mittel, die es uns ermöglichen, nicht nur über das zu reden, was zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt tatsächlich der Fall ist und von dem wir wissen, daß es der Fall ist. Wir können auch über Sachverhalte reden, die nicht der Fall sind oder über die wir nur Unbestimmtes wissen. Die Gesamtheit der sprachlichen Mittel, die diese Redeweisen ermöglichen, faßt man unter dem Begriff Modalität zusammen. Sind sie in einer bestimmten Weise, insbesondere am Verb, grammatikalisiert, spricht man von Modus. In dem Seminar werden einerseits verschiedene Textsorten (auch literarische) hinsichtlich modaler Redeweisen analysiert und andererseits werden wir uns mit den linguistischen Modellen zu Modus und Modalität vertraut machen.
