230257 Academic English (S) (WiSe 2005/2006)

Contents, comment

This course is intended to serve as a transition from secondary school English to competence in the language as it is used in the context of academic research and university level discussion. It involves reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion, and the development of research writing skills and should also prepare you to function successfully at a British or American university. We will begin with an overview of the development of English as a university subject and a consideration of some of the research goals in this field. We will practice oral and written summaries, critical responses, and the formal requirements of the research paper. Attention will also be given to the problem of plagiarism and correct documentation of sources. Each student will be expected to prepare a brief research paper and oral presentation on a subject of his or her choice. There will also be regular reading and writing assignments forming the basis for "active participation."
