Over a century after its heyday in the early twentieth century, modernist literature continues to fascinate its readers. Often thought of as complex and even enigmatic, it offers rich, diverse perspectives on the early decades of the twentieth century and proves to be influential up until the present day. This seminar aims at introducing students to central aspects of this period in British literary history. We will explore the historical and cultural framework as well as central aesthetic conceptions of the period to help us understand and enjoy the literary achievements of leading figures such as Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and Katherine Mansfield. The reading list of this "Genres, Authors, Periods" class will include a selection of poetry, drama and prose text which will be made available via Lernraum.
