The seminar provides an in-depth understanding of the major concepts, theoretical approaches and contemporary issues in social policy and welfare state development. The seminar is divided in three units. Unit 1 introduces the main theories and principles in comparative social policy literature. Unit 2 covers the history of social policy and welfare state in Europe and draws on the institutional and political factors to account for varied social policy decisions and welfare states across in highly-developed countries. Unit 3 provides a general introduction to the emergence and development of social policy in the Global South, with a focus on Latin American, East Asian and post-Soviet states.
A very good command of English language is necessary as lectures, presentations and readings will be in English.
