Course Description and Objectives
This course is aims at teaching students the fundamentals of optical sensing in biomedicine, with a focus of novel technologies that can be used for tissue characterization at molecular level.
Optical technologies such as plasmonics-based sensing, superresolution microscopy, label-free and nonlinear imaging will be reviewed, and their use in the lab, clinic, doctor’s office, or at the point of care, will be described.
Contents
- light interaction with tissue: absorption, scattering (Mie, Raman), fluorescence, phosphorescence; main chromophores and scatterers in tissue.
- plasmonics, quantum dots.
- label vs label-free microscopy/imaging.
- superresolution microscopy techniques and their applications.
- nonlinear optical microscopy and applications.
- imaging deeps inside the tissue: techniques and applications.
- point of care devices.
- lab/demonstration: how to add microscopy, spectroscopy, and light scattering capability on your cell phone.
