Oberflächen sind strukturgebend in unserer Welt und gleichzeitig Orte, an denen eine Vielzahl essentieller Prozesse ablaufen. Struktur und Eigenschaften von Oberflächen sind von fundamentaler Bedeutung um Prozesse auf Oberflächen zu verstehen. Typische Fragestellungen in der Oberflächenforschung sind:

  • Was ist eine Oberfläche und wo beginnt der Festkörper?
  • Was passiert, wenn sich Moleküle einer Oberfläche nähern?
  • Welche Reaktionen laufen auf Oberflächen ab?

In dieser Veranstaltung werden Strategien entwickelt und diskutiert, mit denen man Antworten auf solche Fragen finden kann. Dabei werden Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der experimentellen Oberflächenforschung besprochen und einfache Simulationsansätze ausprobiert.
