This seminar is conceived as an introduction to semantics and will review the major areas within this field. Because this class will be based on Saeed's book (see below), the topics dealt with will include not only central ones from semantics such as the nature of (word and sentence) meaning, thematic roles, logical or formal semantics, cognitive semantics, and componential analysis. In addition, it will also look at a number of questions which go beyond straightforward traditional semantics to include aspects often dealt with under pragmatics such as deixis, inference, information structure, background and contextual information, and speech acts.
