Attitudes towards sex (and its relatives, love and marriage) have changed fundamentally in the course of human history; but it would be a mistake to assume that this change is one from narrow-minded intolerance and shamefaced prudery ('No sex please, we're British!') to liberal laissez-faire and the 21-st-century attitude of 'Anything goes'. We will tackle this impossibly large topic by focussing on literary and autobiographical writing on sexuality and its manifold aspects and implications from the Anglosaxon period into the 20th century. Our aim is to construct a cultural history of sexuality, taking as our subject a people who are notorious for having hot water bottles instead of sex.
