270170 The Brain on Drugs: Crash-Seminar in the Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of Psychoactive Substances and Psychiatric Medications (BS) (WiSe 2011/2012)

Contents, comment

The seminar will provide an introduction in the neuroscience of the main medications and substances that act on the central nervous system, including psychiatric medications (antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, sedative-hypnotics, psychostimulants and cognitive enhancers), alcohol and both licit and illicit drugs of abuse. It will outline aspects related to the psychological and behavioural effects of psychoactive substances and psychiatric medications in both healthy and disease states. It will review the main principles of actions of different classes of psychiatric medications, including neurotransmitter systems, psycho-neuroendocrinological systems, receptor mechanisms, therapeutic index, metabolism, side effects, potential toxicities and drug-drug interactions. Issues related to pharmacogenetics and the variability in response due to age, gender, ethnicity and medical condition will also be discussed.

The leader will present the didactic material and conduct the seminar discussions in English.

The participants are required to make a 45 minutes oral presentation on a topic that is relevant to the theme of the seminar (incl. discussion time). The presentations could be prepared and delivered in English or German. For a list of the recommended topics for presentations and suggested readings, the participants should contact the leader of the seminar.
