Walter Benjamin hat sich umfassend und beinahe lebenslang mit Charles Baudelaires "Les Fleurs du Mal" befasst; von Übersetzungen über Deutungen in einem historischen Kontext bis hin zur Erweiterung zu einer umfassenden Darstellung von Paris als "Hauptstadt des 19. Jahrhunderts" und im "Passagenwerk". Auch in Benjamins literarischem Werk, vor allem in "Berliner Kindheit um 1900" ist der Einfluss Baudelaires nicht zu übersehen. In der Vermittlung durch Benjamins Schriften soll im Seminar die überragende Bedeutung Baudelaires für die Moderne deutlich werden.
