»Charisma ist die große revolutionäre Macht in traditional gebundenen Epochen«, schreibt Max Weber in seiner Herrschaftstypologie. Was heißt charismatische Autorität? Worin besteht der revolutionäre Charakter des Charisma? Was macht die Eigenart charismatischer Herrschaft aus? Der Grundkurs verfolgt diese Fragen von der Vormoderne bis zur Gegenwart: vom frühchristlichen Mönchtum über die sakrale Herrschaft der Ottonen und Kaiser Napoleon I. bis zur Präsidentschaftskandidatur von Barack Obama. Das Forschungsinteresse richtet sich, ausgehend von Webers Idealtypus, darauf, Wesen, Wirkung und Wandel des Charisma im interepochalen Vergleich zu erfassen sowie die Versachlichung und Umbildung charismatischer Autorität an ausgewählten historischen Beispielen zu rekonstruieren und zu analysieren. Exemplarisch werden dabei zentrale Probleme der Geschichtswissenschaft ausgeleuchtet: Es geht u.a. um das Verhältnis von Herrscher und Beherrschten, um die mediale Inszenierung von Politik und Herrschaft und um die Frage der Wirkmächtigkeit von Einzelpersonen in der Geschichte im Vergleich zu Strukturen.
