Das Verhältnis funktionaler, abstrakter Beschreibungen von Lautstrukturen und ihrer konkreten Realisierung ist schwierig zu verstehen. Einerseits schränken die phonetischen Beschreibungsebenen die Möglichkeit der phonologischen Distinktion ein, andererseits gibt es für jede phonologische Distinktion mannigfaltige phonetische Realisierungsmöglichkeiten. Es existiert also keine 1:1-Beziehung zwischen phonologischer und phonetischer Struktur, obwohl die meisten phonologischen Beschreibungen die nahelegen. Letzlich sind aber Menschen dazu befähigt, diese komplexe Beziehung zu erlernen. Sprachsynthesesysteme bieten sich an, um diese Abbildung zu modellieren und zu evaluieren.

Kentnisse im Umfang einer Einführung in die Phonetik und Phonologie sind Voraussetzung zur Teilnahme und werden nicht wiederholt.
