230606 Bridging the Gap: Cuban-American Exile Literature (S) (WiSe 2010/2011)

The Cuban Revolution has generated several waves of exile writers to the United States, each of them dealing with the historical event in their writings from a different perspective. During this course we will explore three generations of Cuban-American writers, from the beginning of the Cuban revolution in 1959 up to the present, with a focus on contemporary authors such as Achy Obejas, Ana Menendez and Ernestro Mestre. Required reading before class: "Life on the Hyphen" by Gustavo Pérez Firmat. Students can obtain up to 3 credit points for regular attendance, class presentation and essay writing.
