230040 Representing Slavery in British Literature (S) (WiSe 2019/2020)

Contents, comment

This course offers an in-depth analysis of representations of slavery in British literature. We will take our cue from William Shakespeare’s romance The Tempest (1611) with its vibrant contexts of early colonial exploration and the corresponding counter-discourses. After that, we will focus on the long eighteenth century and study texts with a complex generic history that represent slavery from the points of view of a witness, a coloniser and a victim of slavery. Apart from exploring the interdependence of the history of slavery and generic developments in that period, we will focus on the ideologically fraught debates on abolition and the dynamics of changing legal and cultural contexts.
