In this student-led Study Group we will be discussing the representation of women in youth culture media. We propose to focus on characters found in popular contemporary works, for example Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series, Katness Everdeen from the Panem trilogy and figures that we will select together to reflect the specific interests and expertise of the participants. While the group members’ tasks and contributions, the material under scrutiny and the analytical tools that will be used are still to be discussed and finalised by the group as a whole, as an initial proposal we envisage our work as consisting above all of analyses of passages or scenes in which we can observe how women are represented. With the help of representation (e. g. Hall), gender (e. g. Conell) and feminist (e. g. Butler) theories, we will explore how these representations work and what they mean within a wider socio-cultural context.
The Study Group will meet for the first time on 8th April!
Students doing Internationalisation at Home can earn three credit points for participating actively in the Study Group. Naturally, students who do not need credit for Int@Home can also attend simply from personal interest.
Please note that Study Groups are organised entirely by students with students for students, and live from the active input of all participants.
To be discussed.
