Masculinity in American Cinema since the 1960s

This seminar focuses on the representation of masculinity in classical Hollywood productions and on gender debates that have emerged from the political debates on masculinity and gender roles in the turbulent period of the 1960s. We will discuss in which ways these debates may have had an impact on the production of film and the construction and representation of masculinity in U.S. American cinema after the 1960s. The discussions will be based on close film analysis. Among the films selected will be Midnight Cowboy, Thelma and Louise, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and Broke-Back Mountain.
