Contents, comment

This course in an exploration of the English vocabulary. We will be concerned with where the words of English come from, how new ones are created, what they mean and how they are used, who uses them, when, where and why. The goal is to expand your vocabulary and increase your awareness of the choices available for expressing yourself. Our work will also enhance your ability to understand, interpret and appreciate a variety of texts by taking words seriously, examining them closely, and becoming sensitive to their habits and nuances. There will be weekly exercises and a final examination.

You will be required to keep a vocabulary journal where you will record new words learned by individual reading and dictionary work throughout the semester. You will also need this book:

George Woolard, ''Key Words for Fluency: Upper Intermediate Collocation Practice,''Thomson ELT, 2004.
