Das Wildkraut Arabidopsis thaliana hat sich zur Modellpflanze für molekulare Untersuchungen entwickelt. An ausgewählten Beispielen werden aktuelle Ansätze zur Aufklärung von Entwicklungsvorgängen, von Signaltransduktion als Antwort auf externe Stimuli, z.B. Licht, oder endogene Faktoren wie Hormone oder die innere Uhr, erläutert. Die Verfügbarkeit der Sequenz des Genoms eröffnet die Möglichkeit zu einer umfassenden Analyse des Transkriptoms und Proteoms. Ferner werden neben genetischen Screens nach Mutanten zunehmend revers genetische Ansätze zur Identifizierung von Individuen mit Defekten in spezifischen Genen gangbar.
